3 Great Hondas for Families to Buy Pre-Owned

If you’re in that phase of life that involves backpacks, sippy cups, and carpool dropoffs, then you need a solid family vehicle—one with the space and features to keep your kids comfortable and safe. Honda makes several vehicles that fit that description, and each option has a distinct personality. If you visit our dealership in search of a used Honda for sale, we can help you decide which Honda vehicle is right for your specific needs. Whether you have a large family or a small one, an adventurous family or a busy one, our team can help you narrow down your vehicle search. Below, you’ll find three of our top picks for used, family-friendly Honda vehicles. Let’s take a look!

The Pilot: A Rugged People Hauler

The Pilot is Honda’s three-row SUV. It was introduced in 2003, but we'd suggest shopping for a pre-owned fourth-generation model. This generation was produced from 2016 to 2022, with a refresh for the 2019 model year. It can be ordered with seating for either seven or eight passengers. If you need eight seats, you’ll have bench seats in the second and third rows. However, if seven seats are all you need, you can find a used Pilot with second-row captain’s chairs for a more spacious cabin and a center aisle that provides easy access to the third row.

We classify the Pilot as rugged because it has plenty of features that make it perfect for families who love to take road trips and go camping together. One such feature is its towing capacity, which sits at 5,000 pounds, making it easy to bring a camper or small trailer along for your adventures. Then there are the all-wheel drive capabilities of the Pilot, which give you traction on slippery surfaces. Whether you’re facing wet roads or dirt roads in a remote location, the Pilot can keep you in command.

You’ll love how spacious the inside of the Pilot feels. The fourth generation offers a total passenger volume of 152.9 cu.ft. And on days you don’t need all of those seats but instead need to load up your vehicle with groceries or, say, all the sports gear for the kids' soccer practice, you can fold down the second and third rows and create 109.2 cu.ft. of cargo volume. It’s no secret that if you’re a parent, your hands are usually full—both figuratively and literally. So we think you’ll like the hands-free power liftgate available on the Pilot. Just kick your foot beneath the rear bumper, and the trunk will automatically open.

Do you need extra help keeping your kids in line while you’re driving? You’ll love the Pilot’s CabinTalk feature, an in-car PA system. It allows you to speak through a microphone and project your voice through the rear speakers. It will also pause any other audio media so that the only thing your kids hear is your voice telling them to stop playing games on their phone and get back to their homework assignment (or whatever you might need to tell them). When you want your kids to kick back and unwind on a road trip, you can take advantage of the available rear entertainment system, where they can stream shows and movies.

The Odyssey: A Classic Minivan

The Odyssey is Honda’s minivan, and when you simply need a cavernous cabin designed for early mornings in traffic and afternoons filled with carpool, you need a minivan. The Odyssey dates back to 1995, but the highest-value pre-owned option is a fifth-generation model from 2018 or later. It has power sliding doors, giving you a nice, wide entrance to either side of the van—perfect for loading up tons of kids or cargo—without requiring much room on either side like swing-out doors do.

The Odyssey also has seating for seven or eight passengers, depending on the trim you select. It has tons of legroom in all three rows, so you shouldn’t hear complaints from backseat passengers about feeling cramped. Configuring those back rows to meet your needs is easy, too, thanks to the Odyssey’s Magic Slide second-row seats. This feature lets you move the second-row seats around, so you can do things like slide the center seat closer to the front row, giving adults easy access to their children, or even remove the second-row seats entirely to create more cargo space. You can imagine the possibilities available to you when all second-row seats can be moved or removed entirely.

The Odyssey has the same CabinTalk feature that the Pilot offers and adds CabinWatch. This feature streams footage of the rear rows onto the infotainment touchscreen, so you can easily monitor backseat passengers by simply glancing at the screen rather than turning your head. Between CabinWatch and CabinTalk, you can see what your kids are doing and communicate with them when you need to.

Like the Pilot, the Odyssey also has an available hands-free liftgate. This includes a programmable height function for the liftgate. So, if you regularly park in a carport or garage with a low ceiling, you can program the tailgate to open to a certain height that avoids hitting the ceiling. Plus, you can program it so that it doesn’t open so high that some of your younger kids who haven’t hit that growth spurt yet can’t reach it.

The fifth-generation Odyssey also has an impressive suite of driver-assist features. Between a Blind Spot Information System, Traffic Sign Recognition System, Multi-Angle Rearview Camera, and even more features, a pre-owned Odyssey is ready to help you stay focused and safe, even when rear seat passengers are fighting for your attention.

The Passport: Spacious and Capable

If you only need seating for five passengers but want the most spacious Honda five-seater SUV available, check out the Passport. It’s a midsize SUV that Honda reintroduced for the 2019 model year, although we particularly recommend the rugged TrailSport trim that was introduced for 2022. The Passport TrailSport has 8.1 inches of ground clearance, advanced AWD capabilities, 5,000 pounds of towing power, and other unique features, making it an excellent choice for small families who love to adventure off the beaten path.

On the rare occasion that you and your partner can get a babysitter for the weekend and slip away for some one-on-one time, you can enjoy tons of cargo volume with the rear seats down. In fact, with the second row down, the Passport enjoys 100.8 cu. ft of cargo volume. Even with the second-row seats up, the trunk is spacious at 50.5 cu.ft. So it’s more than ready for plenty of kid’s backpacks, sports gear, luggage, and more.
