There is no denying that the K4 is a popular model and a strong competitor for the Civic. But once you start digging into what the Civic can do, it’s easy to see why so many people choose Honda’s car over Kia’s model. Let’s go over six of our favorite things about the Civic, and you’ll see why this is the sedan (or hatchback) of choice for so many drivers.
#1 - Superb Base Performance
We’ll get into many available options and features today, but we thought the best place to start is with what comes standard. In particular, it’s a good idea to dig into the kind of standard performance you get with the Civic because that’s what a lot of people are going to choose.
The 2026 Civic comes with a 2.0L I-4 engine that delivers 150 hp and 133 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough for a compact car like this. You get a continuously variable transmission (CVT) for an incredibly smooth ride that adjusts seamlessly as you drive. There are more options available if you want greater power or fuel economy, but this is a terrific starting point.
In fairness to Kia, the 2026 K4 comes with a pretty similar standard engine: a 2.0L I-4 producing 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque. That is objectively less powerful than what Honda delivers, but not by much. Kia also provides a CVT with this engine, so both cars feel quite similar from that standpoint—but Honda makes much more available…
#2 - Upgraded Performance
If you want more muscle in your compact sedan, then Honda has you covered with a number of available options for the 2026 Civic. The Kia K4 also offers a performance upgrade, but not as many as the Civic. This will matter when we compare these two cars, because it ultimately means the 2026 K4 cannot keep up with what Honda brings to the road.
If you like a sedan, Honda offers the Civic Si with a turbocharged 1.5L engine delivering 200 hp and 192 lb-ft of torque. You can see that it’s a big boost over its standard performance, which makes the Civic Si incredibly fun to drive. It comes with a six-speed manual transmission for added control.
Kia offers a similar upgrade, although there are some differences. The K4's GT-Line Turbo trim has a 1.6L turbocharged engine that provides 190 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. You can see that it’s a bit behind the Civic Si in horsepower. The K4 also comes with an eight-speed automatic instead of a manual transmission, which is a letdown.
#3 - Optional Hybrid Powertrain
If fuel efficiency is most important to you, Honda has you covered, offering a hybrid powertrain for the Civic that delivers an impressive 200 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. You can see that it's more powerful than either engine we’ve looked at for both of these cars, ensuring you'll have a lot of fun on the road.
As impressive as this power output is, you’d expect remarkable fuel economy with a hybrid powertrain in a compact car, right? Don’t worry, because Honda provides! Let’s look at the EPA-estimated fuel economy figures for the standard engines on these sedans, as well as the Civic’s available hybrid powertrain:
- 2026 K4 w/ 2.0L I-4: 29 MPG in the city, 39 MPG on the highway, 33 MPG combined.
- 2026 Civic w/ 2.0L I-4: 32 MPG in the city, 41 MPG on the highway, 36 MPG combined.[a]
- 2026 Civic Hybrid: 50 MPG in the city, 47 MPG on the highway, 49 MPG combined.[a]
You can see that the Civic with its hybrid powertrain is the clear winner for fuel economy, and it’s not even close. Even if you stick with the standard engines for these two cars, the 2026 Civic still gets better fuel efficiency than the 2026 Kia K4—so no matter which of Honda's powertrains you’re interested in, the latest Civic can get you around town with fewer stops for gas.
#4 - High-Performance Variants
What’s truly remarkable about the 2026 Honda Civic is that we haven’t even looked at every available option for this car. We’ll dig deeper into its two configurations in a moment, but if you want a hatchback with remarkable performance, then the Honda Civic Type R is exactly what you’ve been looking for.
The 2026 Civic Type R is a performance hatchback with a turbocharged 2.0L I-4 engine that delivers 315 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. That’s the clear winner compared to every other powertrain we’ve looked at when it comes to raw power. Honda has had the lead so far across all options, but here we see that the 2026 K4 has nothing that comes close.
You get a six-speed manual transmission with this powertrain, too, which is just what we like to see in a performance vehicle like this. Admittedly, this is a lot more power than most folks we work with want in a compact car—but if you like the idea of a small car that takes your driving experience to the next level, then here it is!
#5 - Two Excellent Body Styles
While it was hinted at, we want to highlight another thing we love about the Civic: Rather than just giving you one option for a compact car (when so many other automakers seem to have forgotten this segment entirely), Honda gives you two! You can choose either a sedan or a hatchback body for the 2026 Civic.
The sedan offers classic good looks and a sleek overall style, while the hatchback provides more functional rear cargo space. If you like the overall feel of a sedan but want more flexibility (like that of an SUV), then the Civic hatchback is a fantastic choice. Kia has taken a page from Honda's playbook and offers both options for the K4, too, although we prefer Honda’s design.

Not only does the 2026 Civic feel great on the road, but Honda also offers a variety of advanced systems that help protect you every day you drive. You get the Honda Sensing suite's impressive driver assistance technologies with the latest Civic, including standard features like:

We’re happy to say that the 2026 Kia K4 packs a number of great safety features, too. Every trim comes with systems like Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist and Lane Keeping Assist. Options like Front Parking Sensors aren’t standard for the latest K4, though, which is a shame.
