Are you considering purchasing a used crossover SUV from Honda? If you're looking for either a pre-owned CR-V or Honda HR-V for sale near Union City, we have both! And we have not only many model years to explore, but also brand experts who can help you understand your options.
Today, we're looking specifically at the 2023 and 2024 model years of the HR-V and CR-V. These represent the first two years of both models' current generations, so you'll have access to many of the same features you'd get in the latest models, but at more attractive used-vehicle prices.
While both the CR-V and HR-V are considered small SUVs, each is appropriate for a distinctly different driver. As part of our ongoing mission to put Union City residents in vehicles that meet their every need, let's highlight some of the key distinctions between these two models...
Fuel Efficiency
If you have a daily commute around Union City, or maybe you travel into Manhattan for work, fuel efficiency is likely one of your top priorities. The great news is that you'll unlock undeniably solid fuel economy figures in both the sixth-gen CR-V and second-gen HR-V. The main difference is that only the CR-V offers a hybrid powertrain.
The 2023 and 2024 CR-V have either a 1.5L turbocharged I-4 or a 2.0L I-4 hybrid. The turbocharged gas engine can achieve an EPA-estimated 28 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway in FWD.[a] These numbers dip just slightly to an EPA-estimated 27 MPG and 32 MPG, respectively, in AWD.[a] As for the CR-V's hybrid powertrain, you can expect an EPA-estimated 43 MPG in the city and 36 MPG on the highway in FWD or 40 MPG and 34 MPG, respectively, in AWD.[a]
Should you choose a 2023 or 2024 HR-V, you only have one engine option: a 2.0L I-4. This engine does achieve solid fuel economy, too, as you'll see an EPA-estimated 26 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway in FWD or 25 MPG and 30 MPG, respectively, in AWD.[a] If the best possible fuel economy is your focus, then you'll likely lean toward the CR-V, thanks to its hybrid powertrain option.
AWD & Towing
Both the sixth-gen CR-V and second-gen HR-V offer AWD, so you'll be ready for New Jersey's winter roads in either one. However, what the CR-V offers that the HR-V doesn't is towing capability: its 2023 and 2024 iterations can tow up to 1,000 lbs with the hybrid powertrain and 1,500 lbs with the 1.5L turbocharged engine.
If you're an adventurous individual who enjoys camping, boating, or other outdoor excursions, the CR-V might be the model for you. It enables you to take small rigs like camping pods or sailboats along for the ride. Come moving day, it can also tow a small cargo trailer, eliminating the need to rent a truck or pay a moving company for the day.
Will you want to take advantage of all the gorgeous winter destinations around the Northeast? You can tow a snowmobile with the CR-V! In fact, if you have the 1.5L engine, you might be able to tow two snowmobiles on a trailer, so you and your buddy can enjoy some winter adventuring.
Exterior Dimensions
When it comes time to squeeze into parking spots or zip around busy streets, the size of your vehicle matters a lot. Manhattan commuters, in particular, probably want a vehicle that can fit into tight spots and navigate congested roads with ease. And while both the sixth-gen CR-V and second-gen HR-V are both small, the HR-V offers the smallest footprint of the two:
- Length: 179.8 inches
- Width: 72.4 inches
- Height: 63.8 inches (max)
- Ground Clearance: 7.0/7.3 inches
Now, let's compare that to the dimensions of the sixth-gen CR-V:
- Length: 184.8 inches
- Width: 73.5 inches
- Height: 66.5 inches (max)
- Ground Clearance: 7.8/8.2 inches
As you can see, the CR-V is five inches longer than the HR-V, so when you're in a compact spot, your rear might stick out in the CR-V more than in the HR-V. Likewise, when you need to tackle tight parallel parking spots, the HR-V is better equipped to handle them. The HR-V is also nearly three inches shorter than the CR-V, so it can fit into low-ceilinged carport areas more easily.
It is worth noting that the CR-V's taller height also contributes to its higher ground clearance, so if you live on a street in Union City where the snowplow doesn't come through often enough, the CR-V can handle driving over mounds of powder and other debris better than the HR-V.
Interior Dimensions
If fitting into small spaces is your concern, the second-gen HR-V is for you. However, if how many people or how much stuff you can fit inside your SUV is your priority, consider the sixth-gen CR-V. It has a roomier interior than the HR-V, which can make trips more comfortable for your passengers and more accommodating for your cargo.
Taking a quick look at the cargo capacity of each model, without adjusting the cabin layout, the 2023 and 2024 HR-V have 24.4 cu.ft. of rear cargo volume, while the same years' iterations of the CR-V have 39.3 cu.ft. Once you fold the rear row down, the HR-V's cargo capacity expands to 55.1 cu.ft., while the CR-V's expands to 76.5 cu.ft.
With all seats up, the sixth-gen CR-V already offers more than 15 cu.ft. of extra cargo space compared to the second-gen HR-V. Fold the rear rows down, and the CR-V has more than 20 cu.ft. of extra cargo space compared to the HR-V. Whether you load up your vehicle with adventure gear, groceries, school supplies, or bags from a big shopping day, you can fit a lot more in a CR-V.
Let's look at the passenger dimensions for the two models, as well:
- HR-V front legroom: 41.9 inches
- CR-V front legroom: 41.3 inches
- HR-V rear legroom: 37.7 inches
- CR-V rear legroom: 41 inches
- HR-V passenger volume: 98.7 cu.ft.
- CR-V passenger volume: 106 cu.ft.
If your lifestyle requires frequent transport of fellow travelers, they'll be most comfortable in the CR-V. This crossover provides significantly more legroom for rear riders and much more overall passenger volume. If you want to better accommodate your kids, friends, or clients, choose a CR-V.
Travel Satisfied in a Used Honda HR-V or CR-V
Now that you have a clearer understanding of the ideal driver profile for each of these SUVs, take one for a test drive! Those who prioritize a roomy interior and want the ability to tow small vessels should check out the CR-V. It's also the clear choice for those who want exceptional fuel economy, since it's the only one of the two with a hybrid powertrain option.
If it's the most compact dimensions you want, perfect for days downtown or in the Big Apple, the HR-V is the ideal choice. Plus, it costs less than the CR-V, making it the better buy for shoppers watching their spending and who don't require the additional benefits of a slightly bigger SUV.
