The Honda HR-V, which debuted in the United States in the 2016 model year, hit the ground running in the subcompact SUV category and hasn't stopped since. This flexible SUV is the smallest option in Honda's lineup, but that doesn't mean it's the least impressive. In fact, it offers many of the features that everyday drivers are looking for and has the support of a brand known for reliability and value.

If you're looking for a used Honda HR-V for sale, our dealership has several to consider and a team that knows the HR-V inside and out. Not only that, but we're happy to answer any questions you have and explore each of the highlights it offers to help you determine if it is the best choice for your driving needs. If you think it might be, then come by and see the Honda HR-V in person.

Exploring the HR-V

While the HR-V wasn't available in the United States until 2016, that year marks the beginning of its second generation, with the first generation having had its debut in the 1990s in other parts of the world. This can be confusing when you start researching this SUV. As mentioned, when it finally made landfall in the US, it was a fan favorite from the start. This was partially because more and more drivers were gravitating toward SUVs thanks to their flexibility and elevated driving position.

However, those same drivers didn't want a full-size or even midsize SUV, which made the compact sector quite popular. As for the HR-V, the many highlights that were introduced during the second generation helped it maintain its popularity. Let's explore those highlights further...

Design Evolution

The second-gen HR-V received a considerable stylistic improvement, transforming the rugged appearance of its predecessor into something more sleek and modern. Honda refined the HR-V's lines, giving it a coupe-like appearance with a streamlined roofline and an angular, aggressive front fascia. A 2020 facelift continued the redesign with the addition of a revised front bumper, a more prominent grille, and upgraded LED headlights and taillights, which added to the vehicle's improved appearance.

Other design highlights included hidden rear door handles that gave the HR-V a sporty vibe, which enticed younger drivers looking for an SUV, as well as the available 17-inch alloy wheels that gave it a stronger stance.

Functional Space

It's one thing to have a roomy interior; it's another to ensure that the interior is also functional. While you might not think of the HR-V as roomy at first glance, once you slide into this model, you'll see that not all is what it seems. In fact, despite being a subcompact SUV, the HR-V is noted for its large and adaptable cabin. This is thanks, in part, to the addition of Honda's exclusive Magic Seat system.

Magic Seat earns its name in more ways than one. If you're unfamiliar with this feature, it allows the back seats to fold in a variety of ways, increasing storage space and making it ideal for transporting larger objects, groceries, or even bicycles. For instance, Utility Mode maximizes cargo capacity, as the rear seats are folded flat. Essentially, it's what you would normally expect from an SUV. You can also employ Tall Mode, which is when the rear seat cushions are flipped up to accommodate taller objects, or Long Mode, where the passenger and rear seats are both folded down to hold longer items.

In total, you'll enjoy 24.4 cu.ft. of cargo space with the second row upright and 55.1 cu.ft. with the rear seats folded down.

Excellent Technology

The second-gen HR-V included cutting-edge tech to keep you and your passengers engaged and entertained. An upgraded infotainment system allowed you to connect seamlessly to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto; this feature was first included in the 2019 model year for all but the base LX trim. That year was the start of many tech upgrades, with the addition of an available seven-inch touchscreen the year after, as well as the introduction of HondaLink, Honda's app that enhances ownership with options such as satellite-linked navigation, remote start, service reminders, and more. Additionally, the Honda HR-V has standard Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calling and music streaming.

Iconic Safety Features

Honda has long been known for its emphasis on safety, and that can be seen throughout the second generation of the Honda HR-V. As part of the brand's commitment to its Honda Sensing suite, driver assistance tech became available on most trim levels by the 2020 model year, giving drivers increased peace of mind.

Some of those available features included things like the Collision Mitigation Braking System, which offers support in stopping the vehicle if it senses an unavoidable frontal collision. Additionally, the Lane Keeping Assist System works to keep you and your HR-V centered in your lane. Along with that is the Road Departure Mitigation System, which alerts you when you've drifted too far accidentally. Also, Adaptive Cruise Control makes it easier to go with the flow of traffic and keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

You'll also find safety standbys, such as the multi-angle rearview camera, tire pressure monitoring, and vehicle stability assistance, all of which work together to give you confidence mile after mile.

Efficient Performance

The Honda HR-V's performance is optimized for efficiency and city driving while still offering enough power for light off-road excursions. Second-gen models are equipped with a 1.8L four-cylinder engine that generates 141 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. You can occasionally find a six-speed transmission, but only in the earlier years of this generation; for the most part, you'll find a CVT (continuously variable transmission). CVTs offer many advantages, including smooth shifting and better fuel efficiency.

There is also an available Real-Time AWD with Intelligent Control System, which provides superior traction when you need it most. Our team can steer you toward HR-Vs with this drivetrain if all-wheel drive is on your "must-have" list.

A History of Trim Levels

Throughout its second generation, the HR-V was available in a variety of trim levels, letting drivers select the ideal configuration for their needs. Trims such as LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L were consistent options, each offering unique amenities. Notable aspects of each included the following:

  • LX: The base trim offered standard technology and safety features such as Bluetooth and a rearview camera.
  • Sport: This trim added more athletic elements, such as gloss-black accents, 18-inch alloy wheels, and paddle shifters.
  • EX: Available options here included heated front seats, a sunroof, and upgraded safety features. (This is the only trim not to continue with the HR-V after the second generation ended in 2022.)
  • EX-L: The top-tier trim included leather-trimmed seats, an improved audio system, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

Ultimately, the second-generation Honda HR-V made quite a name for itself in the subcompact SUV category, and the third generation picked up where it left off, continuing a legacy of dependability, comfort, functionality, and convenience.
