If you want a midsize SUV that provides a great driving experience day after day, then the Honda Passport should be at the top of your list. This is particularly true if you're interested in a used Honda for sale near Weehawken because the Passport is an amazing choice for a pre-owned vehicle that can help you take care of everything you need to do.
First introduced in the 1990s, the initial Passport was discontinued more than 20 years ago before making a dramatic return for the 2019 model year as an all-new, reimagined midsize SUV. Since then, it's been one of our favorite options and has found a warm welcome thanks to everything it delivers. Let's review what you'll find when shopping for used Passport models and how to make sure you get everything you're looking for.
Important Differences in Model Years
Unless you go much further back than we'd suggest for your next used vehicle, you'll find most of our recommendations within one generation of the Passport. Since its return for 2019, the Passport has been through some changes and updates, but it's delivered a single generation through the 2025 model year.
This means that every used Honda Passport you'll find from recent years has similar features, yet there have been some significant changes that you should know about as you shop. Here are key model years and what you need to know if you're interested in a used Honda Passport to get you around Weehawken each day.
2019 Honda Passport
The best place to start when looking at used Passports is with the 2019 model year, since it establishes a baseline for what you'll find in general. As we said, this launched the modern era for the Passport and saw its release as a stylish midsize SUV that's incredibly fun to drive.
With a design similar to the three-row Honda Pilot, the Passport is a bit shorter, although it's still quite spacious, and its two-row design means you get a lot of cargo space inside. Up to five passengers can comfortably stretch out in this model, plus you get over 41 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and about 78 cu.ft. of total cargo volume behind the front seats.
Every used Passport you find from this generation has the same engine: a 3.5L V6 that provides 280 hp and 262 lb-ft of torque. This is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission; also, the Passport has 5,000 lbs of maximum towing capacity to help you get more done while driving around Weehawken.
Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard on the 2019 Honda Passport, although all-wheel drive (AWD) is available, so you'll find used models with both setups. Keep this in mind when exploring different models: FWD gets better fuel economy figures, while AWD gives you added traction and control when dealing with rough winter weather here in New Jersey.
When looking at these pre-owned Passports, you'll find four different trim levels. The Sport has standard features like a five-inch infotainment system, tri-zone automatic climate control, and a seven-speaker sound system. The EX-L provides upgrades such as a leather-trimmed interior, heated front seats, and a ten-way power driver's seat.
The Touring trim goes even further with heated front and rear seats to keep your passengers comfy in the winter, a hands-free power tailgate, and a ten-speaker sound system. Finally, you can find Elite trims that come with AWD standard, along with a wireless phone charger, perforated heated and ventilated front seats, and more.
2021 Honda Passport
Looking at 2020 and 2019 models, you'll generally find the same features, but there are some noteworthy changes you should have in mind when it comes to models from other years.
For the 2021 model year, Honda swapped out the standard five-inch infotainment display for an eight-inch screen, which was available in previous years (and standard on EX-L and higher trims). This isn't a huge difference, but it's worth keeping in mind if you want great interior tech features without worrying about which trim you're looking at.
2022 Honda Passport
With the 2022 Passport, you'll find more dramatic changes for this SUV because Honda gave it a refresh and numerous updates this year. On the outside, the 2022 Passport looks better than ever before, with a bold front grille, rugged front and rear bumpers, and more noteworthy overall looks.
Smaller details like contrast stitching inside the EX-L trim help the Passport pop when you're looking at it, so it's pretty easy to tell when you find one of these models compared to the three years that came before. Most importantly, the Sport and Touring trims were discontinued, making the EX-L the starting trim; it was followed by the off-road TrailSport trim and the high-end Elite trim.
2023 Honda Passport
In 2022, the EX-L still had standard FWD, with AWD available, but both the TrailSport and Elite had standard AWD. With the 2023 model year, Honda dropped the EX-L's FWD completely, which means that all 2023 and later Passport models have AWD as the only drivetrain option.
We're fine with this because we love how Honda's AWD system feels when dealing with Weehawken's roads with slush or ice in the winter. The only small drawback is that AWD gets slightly lower fuel efficiency than FWD models, but the difference is so minimal that you'll likely never be impacted by it while driving in the real world.
2026 Honda Passport
Although we're not going to dive too deep into the details of this model year, we need to mention it for one key important reason: 2026 launches the Passport's all-new fourth generation. You won't find these models on the used market just yet, but it won't be too long until you do, so keep that in mind.
The 2025 model year marks the end of the third generation of the Passport with the features we've examined so far. The 2026 model has slightly more horsepower, a larger interior with more cargo space, and bigger displays to support innovative new tech features.
Details to Consider and Remember
We've highlighted major features while looking at different model years, but we wanted to take a moment to reiterate some important points. Beyond the year that you're looking at, pay special attention to the trim level and other features on any particular Passport you're interested in.
Prior to 2023, you'll need to check for either FWD or AWD so you can get the kind of driving experience you prefer; just remember how the trim levels changed with the 2022 model year and its mid-generation refresh. In particular, if you're interested in something with light off-road capabilities, then a TrailSport from 2022 or later is a wise trim to look for.
Find the Right Passport for Weehawken
As you can see, there are some significant features to pay attention to while you look at different used Passports. You can't go wrong with any of them, but some differences can have a huge impact on your shopping or driving experience. If you're on a tight budget, for example, then a model prior to the 2022 refresh can help you save money, especially a FWD Passport. Meanwhile, models from after the refresh will provide you with enhanced features and more to enjoy.
No matter what you need from your next vehicle, we're here at Hudson Honda to help you explore different used Passports and make sure you find everything you've been looking for.
